Help break the cycle of hunger in Honduras.
The Hunger Problem
WITH YOUR SPONSORSHIP, HUNGER AND ABUSE, THE TWO GREATEST HARDSHIPS FOR THE CHILDREN OF HONDURAS, CAN BE AVOIDED.
Imagine a hunger so intense and the only available solution is searching through garbage from the street just to experience momentary relief. This is a choice that many Honduran children and families face daily. They resort to drinking water from the local river because they lack running water in their homes. Unfortunately, because the local river is often the only source of water for everyone, it is not only used for drinking water but also to wash and clean just about everything…from people, to clothes, to even school buses.
We come across many children within our outreach. Picture this: a child with a round belly and beautiful blond hair playing in the street. This child looks healthy and happy. However, in reality her hair is blond because she is so severely malnourished that it can’t keep its natural dark pigment. Her belly is round because of intestinal parasites and severe malnnutrition.
But there’s hope…
The Hunger Solution
LAS BRISAS DE AMOR AND LA PRIMAVERA FEEDING STATIONS ARE OPERATED IN THE POOREST NEIGHBORHOODS WITHIN HONDURAS.
Open Door Ministries operates two public feeding stations in Tocoa feeding approximately 275 children each week. Our Las Brisas feeding station feeds 100 children a day, five days a week. Our La Primavera feeding station feeds 175 children three days a week. For most of these children, this will be the only food they will eat that day. Visiting mission teams have the opportunity to impact these children by assisting with serving lunch and interacting with the children throughout their time there. Lunch always starts with a prayer and is followed by singing. All the children join in and it’s quite an experience to witness!
Las Brisas de Amor feeding station is located on the banks of the Tocoa River. This beautiful river is just a short 5 minute walk to the end of the road and the other side of it is covered in lush jungle. Some children actually live across the river in the jungle. They must make their way across the fast flowing water to get their food each day. These children bath, drink, and play in the extremely contaminated water- often resulting in intestinal worms and parasites. Occasionally, visiting mission teams will conduct a wound treatment and deworming clinic for the children.
There is no permanent structure for the La Primavera feeding station. Meals are prepared at the Village of Hope Orphanage and we serve food from the back of a vehicle. Fortunately, at Las Brisas de Amor feeding station, a hot lunch is prepared Monday through Friday. These meals are available to children up to the age of eleven. Because funding is always a problem, the children at La Primavera feeding station only receive one hot lunch each week. However, a partial sponsorship of just $35 a month will provide a lunch for one child each weekday for the entire month. With enough sponsorships, Open Door Ministries will be able to offer five meals a week at La Primavera feeding station. One hundred percent of all donations and sponsorships go directly to support and care for the children at Open Door Ministries.
